The oldest of four children, Dr. Nyja Thordarson, grew up in the countryside just outside of Red Deer. Today, she still enjoys many of the same things, including being outdoors, campfires, visiting with friends and family, playing basketball and soccer, as well as spending time reading, and listening to music.
Her interest in dentistry was sparked by working at her mother’s dental clinic during the summers of her teenage years and up through her early twenties. After completing two years of university in science, she decided that she wanted to pursue dentistry as a profession. In 2003, she completed her Honours Environmental Biology degree at the University of Alberta. She would later go on to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Western Ontario in 2007.
Sadly, Dr. Thordarson’s mother, Dr. Mona Billey, would never see her daughter become the dentist she is today; Dr. Billey became ill and passed away during Nyja’s final year of dental school.
After finishing school, Dr. Thordarson took over her mother’s practice in Red Deer, where she was honored to follow in her mother’s footsteps. There, she also learned about the business side of dentistry and formed rewarding relationships with the patients and staff.
In 2011, Dr. Thordarson sold the practice in order to try her hand at living and working in different parts of the country. After living in Ottawa and Canmore, she is now proud to call Calgary “home” and the hometown of her beautiful dental practice. She is very excited and pleased to have the opportunity of establishing the same kind of friendly, professional, and top-notch dental clinic that her mother had in Red Deer.
Today, Dr. Thordarson enjoys general family dentistry and all the different procedures and people she encounters throughout the day. In continuing her knowledge, she has taken advanced training in neuromuscular dentistry, TMJ and Temporomandibular disorders, migraines, and cosmetics at Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies. She also has a special interest in sleep medicine, sleep apnea, and orthodontics. She is also a certified sleep appliance technician and provider of DNA Appliance® systems.
She is appreciative of the work being done in general health studies, which demonstrates the connections between oral health and the health of the whole body. She understands that oral health can enormously affect the health of the whole patient — not just the teeth and gums. She has implemented state-of-the-art digital radiography, intra-oral photography, infection control standards, and patient education modalities into the clinic in order to provide the most up-to-date standards of care possible.
